OPR explained

What Malaysian borrowers should know about OPR

The Overnight Policy Rate is Bank Negara Malaysia’s monetary-policy rate. It influences market funding costs, but it is not automatically the same as the rate charged on every loan.

OPR is reviewed at MPC meetings, not once every quarter

BNM scheduled six Monetary Policy Committee meetings for 2026—in January, March, May, July, September, and November. The rate can be raised, reduced, or kept unchanged at any meeting.

Which loans may react to an OPR change?

Variable-rate home and business loans linked to a bank’s reference rate are the most directly exposed. Fixed-rate financing may not change, while credit-card and personal-financing terms depend on the product agreement.

How the payment estimate works

The calculator applies the selected basis-point change to your current effective rate, then recalculates a standard reducing-balance monthly instalment over the remaining tenure.

Common questions

Malaysia OPR FAQ

Does every OPR change move my loan rate by the same amount?

Not necessarily. The timing and size of any repricing depend on your bank, reference-rate framework, spread, review date, and loan agreement.

How often does Bank Negara Malaysia change the OPR?

There is no fixed quarterly change. BNM reviews monetary policy at scheduled MPC meetings and may leave the OPR unchanged for many meetings.

Is this calculator a bank quotation?

No. It is an educational estimate using a standard amortisation formula. Check your loan statement or ask your bank for the exact repricing and instalment details.

How this page stays current

01

Official decision history

The live rate and chart are read from Bank Negara Malaysia’s official OPR decisions page and refreshed at the edge every 15 minutes.

02

Dated fallback snapshot

If BNM cannot be reached, the page uses a checked-in decision history and clearly labels the snapshot date rather than presenting it as live.

03

Estimate scope

The loan model assumes monthly amortisation and an unchanged remaining tenure. It excludes fees, payment holidays, arrears, insurance, and bank-specific rounding.
